I think the term “real traveler” is very subjective. It’s one of those things that means something different to each of us.
But I have shared an article before about the difference between vacation and travel, and I think that also explains the difference between a tourist and a traveler.
But what really makes someone a ‘real traveler’?
A Real Traveler Expands Their Horizon
A real traveler does more than just visit a destination, they expand their horizons through travel. It’s not just about seeing new places or checking things off a list. It’s about growing as a person through those experiences.
A real traveler loves how travel opens their eyes, encouraging them to see the world and life from different perspectives. For them, the journey is as much internal as it is external.
“We travel not just to travel and marvel at people, places, things. That’s not just it. That was never just it for us. We travel to learn, to experience, and to feel all the spectrums of being human in this world.” – HuffPost
Maybe that sounds a bit deep or vague, but traveling to foreign countries and unknown places teaches you so much about the world. About your values and opinions, and how they differ from some of the people you meet.
About how others live such different lives, and how you can learn something from any of them.
What Makes a Traveler a Traveler
I sometimes read articles that make statements like ”you’re not a real traveler until you’ve taken an overnight bus” or ”you’re not a real traveler if you have never traveled alone”.
Honestly, I don’t agree. Sure, some of us have spent years traveling, visiting remote places, and embarking on solo adventures. But those aren’t the things that define a “real traveler.”
To me, a real traveler is anyone who wants to go beyond the standard vacation. They’re the ones looking for something deeper—more than just lounging by the pool or snapping selfies at tourist hotspots.
A real traveler is curious, eager to explore new countries, and excited to dive into different cultures. It’s someone who takes the time to get to know places and people—not just on the surface, but by immersing themselves in the experience.
It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling on a tight budget, staying in a luxury hotel, or hiking through the wilderness. What matters is the mindset—the desire to learn, to connect, and to truly engage with the world around you.
What Makes Someone a Traveler?

So, what makes someone a traveler?
It’s not about ticking off destinations or collecting passport stamps. It’s about having an open heart and mind. It’s about curiosity—the kind that drives you to want to know more about the world and the people in it.
A real traveler doesn’t just pass through; they try to understand. They ask questions, they listen, and they take in the sights and sounds of a place with genuine interest.
At the end of the day, being a traveler isn’t about how far you’ve gone or how many countries you’ve visited. It’s about the way you approach the journey—whether that’s exploring your own backyard or crossing continents.
So, the next time someone tries to tell you what makes a “real traveler,” just remember: it’s not about the number of destinations, but the depth of your experiences.
