Thank you for visiting Spendlifetraveling.com!
I started this website to be able to share some of my experiences traveling the world and living as an expat.
I first moved abroad in 2002, when I spent a summer working in Spain. That experience changed me. It showed me there is a big world out there to explore and that life isn’t necessarily ‘just the way it is’. I strongly believe we (we, the ones privileged enough to be born in freedom and relative wealth) create our own lives and our own happiness. And that makes me feel obliged to make the most of my life. By now, almost 15 years since I first moved abroad, I have found jobs, volunteer opportunities and ways to travel all over the world.
Am I rich or do I have someone else paying for my lifestyle? No, I choose to live a relatively simple life, don’t own much, often stay in budget accommodation and spend hours and hours in airports to catch the cheapest flights with often crappy connections. But I have also stayed in some of the most amazing luxury resorts, sailed on beautiful yachts, been driven around in expensive cars and spent the night on an uninhabited tropical island once.
I have flown an airplane, been parasailing behind a car in India, paragliding off a cliff in Goa, I have been diving all over the world, I have had the opportunity to volunteer at an NGO in Mauritius working with dolphins every day, I got to teach English to kids in a slum school in India, I fed spider monkeys in Guatemala and yes, all of that makes me feel alive. I have stepped out of my comfort zone. I have seen the world: good and bad. I have learnt from every experience and hope to continue doing so for a long time to come.
Traveling is the ultimate drug. The more experiences you have, the more addictive it becomes.
On this website I share information about the places I visit and try to give tips and recommendations that are both useful to travelers and to expats. I also share guest posts from a select number of experienced travelers all over the world and I interview expats about their life abroad.
I love to write about my travels, my sometimes amazing and sometimes horrible experiences abroad. For years I have been writing in Dutch, both for my own travel blog and for (online) magazines. Unfortunately most people in the world don’t speak Dutch. So it was about time to start working on my written English and start this website. The first time I was asked to write an article in English was for W Retreat & Spa Maldives, one of the best resorts in the Maldives. They invited me to be present at their Chinese New Year celebration in February 2013 and to review their resort. A great experience in an amazing resort. Of course from now on I will share experiences like these on this website. The article I wrote for W Retreat & Spa can be found here.

And, one of my proudest achievements: a detailed interview about my life traveling the world was included in a book! Find out more about this book on Retireeveryotheryear.com
If there is anything specific you would like to know more about, if you have information about one of the destinations I have visited that you would like to share with the world through my website and /or social media, or would like to discuss any type of collaboration, please send me an e-mail: email@example.com
Enjoy your travels!
Places I have visited
So far I have worked in more than 10 different countries, volunteered in 5 countries and studied languages in 2 countries. But there is so much more left to explore!
For years I have kept a blog about my travels in Dutch. I have written about my amazing experiences in different countries, about problems I faced and about the countries themselves and the problems they faced. I now try to do a similar thing on this website but include more general information about my destinations and about life as a traveler and an expat.
