How to Drop Everything And Start Over: The Expat Story

Thinking about dropping everything and moving? Wondering how to leave everything behind and move to a new country?

It might feel daunting, but trust me, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

I’ve dropped everything and moved abroad several times now. The first time, I packed up my life and moved to Spain. I had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be a transformative experience. I’ve since moved to various other countries, each time learning something new about myself and the world around me.

Dropping Everything and Moving: Is It Worth It?

Leaving everything behind and starting fresh in a new country sounds exciting, but it’s not always as glamorous as it might seem.

The truth is, at some point, you’ll miss certain things from home—whether it’s your favorite local food, family traditions, or even the comfort of familiar places. The grass isn’t always greener.

But here’s the other side: you’ll meet incredible new people, explore cultures you never thought you’d experience, and grow in ways you can’t imagine.

Dropping everything and moving can challenge you in ways that make you stronger and more adaptable.

How to Leave Everything Behind and Move to a New Country

So, how exactly do you drop everything and start over? It might feel overwhelming, but with some careful planning, you can make it work.

Here are a few of my tips:

1. Make a Practical Plan

Start by researching your new destination—learn about the cost of living, the job market, and visa requirements.

Create a moving checklist with everything you need to do before leaving, from canceling utilities to getting your paperwork in order.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

While moving abroad is exciting, it can also be difficult.

You may face culture shock, homesickness, and (many) moments of frustration. But these challenges are a part of the process, and overcoming them will make your experience even more rewarding.

3. Build a Local Support Network

Whether it’s through local expat groups or new friends, having a support system is key.

Moving abroad, whether it’s alone or with your family, can feel isolating. So it helps to connect with others who have been through similar experiences.

I’ve found that expat communities are often warm, welcoming, and full of useful tips.

Before I move to a new place I always check if there are relevant Facebook groups I can join (just search Facebook for ‘expats in [your destination]’). These groups are great for information about life in your new destination, but also a great place to meet other expats to connect with.

After moving I check Meetup.com or ask in the Facebook groups to see if there are any events I can join to meet people and start building a local network.
