Looking for day trips from Cancun?
I’ve spent a lot of time in and around Cancun. Cancun is a popular travel destination with a lot to offer, both in the city itself and in the surrounding area.
In this article I want to share the best day trips from Cancun. Whether you’re into history, tropical islands, or lively Mexican towns, you’ll find a day trip on this list that suits you.
About Cancun Day Trips
Cancun is the most popular tourist destination in Mexico. It’s a hub for travelers coming to Mexico for a vacation. The all-inclusive resort experience is Cancun’s claim to fame, and it brings a ton of tourists to the city’s hotels and resorts.
Cancun is a big city and has a lot to offer, but it’s not the only thing that the area has going for it.
There is a lot to see on the Yucatan Peninsula, and most of it is accessible from Cancun. There are lots of islands, ruin sites, cenotes, and small towns close enough to Cancun to make a day trip.
Some of these day trips can be booked as organized day tours from Cancun, but they can also be done on your own, by public transport or (rental) car.
We’re going to run through the best ones to help you plan the perfect Cancun vacation.
The Best Day Trips from Cancun
1. Isla Mujeres

One of the most popular day trips from Cancun is a trip to the nearby island called Isla Mujeres.
It’s a charming little island off the coast of Cancun where day trippers have time to wander the streets of the downtown area for some nice shopping and dining options.
Isla Mujeres is famous for having beautiful snorkeling options too. You can book a snorkeling trip from one of the tour companies around the dock where you get dropped off.
If you are day tripping, you’ll want to stay close to the downtown area. There are some fun beach bars with nice views of and access to the ocean where you can relax with more of a small island town feel than anywhere back in Cancun.
Isla Mujeres is also famous for swimming with whale sharks, if you visit in summer. There are tours you can book that will take you out on the ocean and give you the best chance to see these whale sharks, along with sea turtles, dolphins, and stingrays!

2. Chichen Itza

We can’t talk about Cancun without talking about Chichen Itza. It’s one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, and one of the most popular attractions in all of Mexico.
The ancient city of Chichen Itza was a large city built by the Maya people. What you find there now is a number of impressive ruins, with the Temple of Kukulcan, a massive pyramid, being the most famous one.
It’s a very busy and touristy site, which might turn off some travelers. It’s important to remember though, that it is busy for a reason. Chichen Itza is worth visiting, it’s truly an incredible site.
The good news is that there are some options for tours that arrive early, or you can catch an early local bus from Cancun to arrive before most other tourists. It’s much easier to get the pictures you want earlier in the morning.
The archaeological site is huge, sprawling, and lined with vendors selling goods and souvenirs. Again, this will be a turn-off to many, but if you focus on the site and not the sales pitches, Chichen Itza is a great day trip from Cancun.
Tip: combine your visit to Chichen Itza with a stop in Valladolid, a beautiful city with a rich history. Or stop at a cenote along the way for a refreshing swim.
3. Tulum

About an hour south of Cancun is one of the hottest and fastest-growing destinations in Mexico.
Tulum is a full-fledged destination in its own right. But, if you prefer to keep your base in Cancun, which many travelers and families do, it is possible to see Tulum on a day trip from Cancun.
There are a lot of great activities in Tulum. Near the outside of the city, by the beach, you can find one of the most beautiful and scenic Mayan ruin sites in the world. Mayan structures set against the backdrop of cliffs and the crisp blue sea will give you some of the best pictures of your trip.
Tulum is also famous for its beaches, and you can find some of the best cenotes in Mexico around Tulum.
If you’re traveling as a family or in a small group, you may want to book one of the many private tours available, for an exclusive and unforgettable experience.
If you’ll be planning a day trip to Tulum, this guide with Tulum travel tips is the perfect place to start.
4. Isla Contoy

If you’re looking for a unique experience, look no further than Isla Contoy. It’s a small island north of Cancun. The island is uninhabited and has been designated a National Reserve, protected by the Mexican Government.
The easiest way to get to Isla Contoy is on a day tour from Cancun. You’ll have a snorkeling stop at a beautiful reef before being taken to the lush green scenery of Isla Contoy. Only 200 people per day are permitted to visit the island, so you’ll have an exclusive experience that not everyone knows about.
The beaches of the island are beautiful, and the surrounding tropical landscape will provide you with views you won’t be able to find in Cancun.
The only building on the island is a visitors’ center where tour guides teach you about the history of the island and the wildlife that can be seen there.
There is a walking path that curves through the jungle and up a hill to a lookout point where you can see the whole island. It only takes a few minutes to walk the path so I’d definitely recommend it. The view from the top of the hill is spectacular!
5. Holbox

Speaking of islands, Isla Holbox sits off the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, and is another fast-growing destination. It’s listed as one of the best Caribbean islands to visit.
For those preferring to stay in Cancun and utilizing the day trip tactic, you’ll be happy to know that Holbox is accessible as a day trip.
It’ll take about 3 hours to get from Cancun to Chiquila by bus or other direct transport. From there, the ferry ride is pretty quick, between 30 and 40 minutes.
The ferry drops you off at the main port of Holbox, where you’ll notice immediately that there are no cars on the island. All the vehicles are motorized golf carts. Cars wouldn’t fare too well on the dirt roads of Holbox. That’s right, there are no paved roads on the island.
Stroll around the town, enjoy some delicious food, or spend a lazy day on the beach. Holbox is all about slowing down.
But, Holbox also offers some great activities. Go kayaking through the mangroves, or take a kitesurfing lesson, which is popular on the island.
If you stay on the island until after sunset you could see the natural phenomenon called bioluminescence. Holbox is one of the few places in the world that provides the right conditions to see these tiny plankton-like creatures that light up when disturbed. It’s a unique and interesting experience that will give you an awesome story to tell everyone when you get home!
6. Las Coloradas

Staying on the theme of unique scenery, Las Coloradas is a small beach town on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula where you’ll see something totally and completely unique, pink- and orange-colored lagoons!
Most of the lagoons of Las Coloradas are filled with water that shines bright pink, but you will see orange-colored water as well. This is caused by the minerals in the sand of this area and how those minerals interact with the waters of the lagoons.
There are a few options to tour the lagoons. You can take a walking tour that includes climbing the overlook tower and walking along one side of the lagoon complex. Or you can take a bicycle tour which encircles the whole complex, so you can view all the different lagoons.
I recommend the bicycle tour. Most people do the walking tour, and I always like to do what the least amount of people do, so I can get photos without people in the background and have the most exclusive experience possible.
There are some good photo ops positioned on the path that circles the lagoons, riding the path on a bike and stopping wherever you want is the ideal way to enjoy this beautiful, natural site.
If you’re looking for an organized day trip to Las Colorada, this one is a good option, which includes the bicycle tour.
7. Playa del Carmen

For an easy day trip from Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a great choice.
Playa del Carmen is a hip town about 30 minutes south of Cancun and is a great spot to escape for the afternoon or the evening.
But rather than a day trip, I’d recommend an evening trip to “Playa” as it is affectionately called. The most happening area in Playa is 5th Avenue, where you’ll find great shopping and dining options.
Once the sun goes down, the party starts in downtown Playa del Carmen. The bar and club scene has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for quiet lounge-style cocktails, or for something louder and wilder, you’ll find it in Playa.
The atmosphere in Playa isn’t quite as touristy and big-city feeling as Cancun, but there is still hustle and bustle in the downtown area. Still, it makes for a great afternoon/evening out to get away from Cancun and see something new.

And if you’d prefer not to deal with the logistics of getting to your chosen day trip destination, there are a lot of great organized day trips from Cancun that can be booked online.
If you do want to explore the area around Cancun independently, ADO is the main bus company in the region and has reliable buses. But, for more flexibility, and to see more of the area, renting a car is a better option.
You can also book private transfers from Cancun, where local English-speaking drivers will take you to your chosen destination at your own pace. Services like this allow you to add stops at cenotes, small towns, or other hidden gems en route.
