What’s it like to move to and live in Bucharest?
Bucharest, to me, feels like the type of capital city that is rapidly changing and may soon become a popular expat destination.
I visited Bucharest briefly after I joined a digital nomad retreat in Sinaia.
I liked Bucharest and I am curious what life here is really like, which is why I’m excited to interview Vik, who moved here from the UK several years ago.
This interview is part of the Ask an Expat series. In this series I interview people living all over the world but outside of their country of birth. I try to help paint an honest picture of the ups and downs of living abroad, share tips for anyone thinking about moving abroad, and information about the place the expat now lives in.
Living in Bucharest, Romania

Name: Vik
Age: 34
Hometown: London / New Delhi
His Story:
“Coming from an Indian background, I value the community and warmth central to our culture.
My journey has been marked by a passion for interpersonal relationships, and I discovered a similar warmth among people here in Romania.
I first visited Bucharest in 2018 and immediately felt a strong connection. The energy of the city and the warmth of the Romanian people really stood out to me. That trip inspired me to move here and pursue a career in the hospitality industry.”
Why Did You Move to Bucharest?

”I fell deeply in love with Romania during my first visit with my partner, who is Romanian; we met in London while working in hospitality.
The rich culture, stunning architecture, and the people’s warmth struck a chord with me, particularly in contrast to my experiences living in London.
To me, it felt like New Delhi in Europe; I enjoyed connecting with locals who shared fond tales of classic Indian films from the 90s, and the historical Indo-Romanian ties, especially the aura surrounding iconic film star Raj Kapoor. This sparked my desire to make Romania my home base.”
What Do You Like About Living in Bucharest?
”Bucharest has a unique charm, characterized by its friendly atmosphere and warm locals, making everyday life enjoyable.
The city’s fusion of history and modernity provides endless cultural experiences. I appreciate the vibrant arts scene and the many beautiful parks, which help create a balanced lifestyle.”
What Do You Dislike About Living in Bucharest?
”Like any major city, Bucharest has its challenges.
Traffic can be frustrating, especially during rush hour.
From a work perspective, at first, I found it challenging to adjust to the local work culture and understand how things are done professionally here. However, these challenges ultimately became crucial to my development, fostering growth and better integration into the industry.
Bureaucracy is another thing you’ll hear expats complain about. Whether it’s paperwork or dealing with public offices, things don’t always move quickly.”
Is Bucharest Safe as a Place to Live?

”I find Bucharest to be generally safe for both residents and visitors.
Of course you should be mindful of your surroundings, as in any city, but the overall atmosphere contributes to a sense of security.
Personally, I haven’t experienced any negative incidents.”
Is Bucharest Expensive as a Place to Live?
”Bucharest offers a wide range of options when it comes to the cost of living.
While prices have gone up in recent years, especially in areas like dining and hospitality, it’s still much more affordable than most Western European capitals.
You’ll find something for nearly every budget. Whether you prefer high-end restaurants in the city center or cozy local spots, there’s flexibility in how much you spend.
Rent can vary significantly depending on the neighborhood, but overall, Bucharest remains an accessible city for expats and remote workers looking for a more budget-friendly European lifestyle.”
What Is Your Favorite Thing to Do in Bucharest?

”I enjoy exploring the city’s restaurants, hotels, and cafes, partially because of my profession.
Every corner of Bucharest holds a story and offers exciting spots to discover, from historical landmarks to contemporary art galleries. There’s always something happening.”
Any Favorite Bars and Restaurants in Bucharest You’d Love to Share?
”I have a soft spot for The Vault Bar at Marmorosch Hotel, where I served as Director of Food & Beverage from its opening in 2021 until 2023. The bar has a unique appeal and vibrant atmosphere.
For restaurants, I’m fond of the recent trend in Asian cuisine, particularly Jeonjuu Korean BBQ in the Old Town.
I also recommend the newly renovated Sky Lounge on the 21st floor of the Grand Hotel Bucharest for beautiful views and sunsets.
Vatra is a great choice for traditional Romanian dishes, much better than the tourist traps in the Old Town.
Outside of the city, the Crama Restaurant in Sinaia is a must-visit for traditional Romanian dishes, and Sinaia is a great day trip or weekend getaway from Bucharest.”
What Is the Expat/International Community Like in Bucharest?
”The expat community in Bucharest is lively and diverse.
You’ll meet people from a range of backgrounds here, and the expat community has been growing noticeably in recent years.”
Any Tips for Moving to/Living in Bucharest?

“Embrace local culture and stay open to new experiences.
Although the younger generations in Bucharest tend to speak English well, learning a few Romanian phrases can significantly improve your interactions.
Building a network is crucial for navigating your new environment and enhancing your experience.”
Any Resources You Found Useful During the Process of Moving to and Building a New Life in Bucharest?
“Not particularly, but I recommend reading the regulations and guidelines provided by the Romanian authorities on their website.
To connect with people and build a network in Bucharest, there are several Facebook Groups for expats in Bucharest. I recommend joining all of them, as they are also a great place to ask questions or find information when you’re moving and settling into life here.
Another good way to meet people is through Meetup.com. You’ll find a range of events here, attracting both expats and locals.”
Is There Something You Really Have to See or Do When You Are in Bucharest?

“Visit the Palace of the Parliament; it’s an architectural wonder that reflects both Romania’s history and splendor.
Also, exploring the Old Town and indulging in the local cafes and shops offers a genuine taste of the city’s vibrant culture.”
About Bucharest

Bucharest is Romania’s capital and largest city, home to around 1.7 million people.
It’s a lively, sometimes chaotic mix of old-world charm and communist-era grit, with pockets of modern flair.
You’ll find grand architecture, leafy parks, a growing number of coworking spaces, and a surprisingly dynamic café and nightlife scene.
The cost of living is still relatively affordable compared to many Western European capitals, which is one of the reasons more expats and digital nomads are giving it a chance.
Whether you’re here for a few months or planning something more permanent, Bucharest offers a mix of culture, opportunity, and a good dose of personality.
