Are you looking for the best breakfast places in Durban? Then continue reading!
I’m a big breakfast person. I think a lot of people are, and for us it’s important to know where you can find the best breakfast when you’re in a new city.
Fortunately, Durban, the city I currently call home, has plenty of high-quality eateries serving up delicious breakfasts. I whittled down the list to a few favorites.
The Best Breakfast in Durban: 6 Places to Visit
1. The Glenwood Bakery
Best for: fresh artisanal bread and hipster vibes
Highlights: Delicious coffee and a more ‘foodie’ feel
The Glenwood Bakery is a staple for Durban’s gourmands and coffee aficionados.
Breakfasts are simple but flavourful, with only top-quality ingredients used. Their poached eggs are perfection.
The atmosphere is relaxed, with people working on laptops, reading novels, or perusing the local paper.
The attached bakery sells melt-in-your-mouth breads (six different kinds are produced on a daily basis) and pastries just out the oven.
2. The Bike & Bean Durban
Best for: A relaxed, affordable beach-side bite
Highlights: Sea view, and the ultimate in chilled-out Durban vibes
Get to know the real Durban at The Bike & Bean, which opens at 6am and is a firm favorite of local cyclists and runners who come by for their morning fuel.
This laid-back locale is very affordable, and a satisfying breakfast with the works won’t set you back very much.
Then sit back and engage in some top-notch people watching or go for a morning dip – the ocean is just steps away! You can also hire bikes from here and go for a leisurely cycle along the promenade.
3. Antique Café
Best for: Delicious food made with love
Highlights: Quirky décor, a beautiful garden oasis
Antique Café is packed with curiosities, funky artwork, and carefully mismatched furnishings.
If indoors is great, outdoors is even better – opt for the spacious backyard, sit under the trees and soak up the eclectic, peaceful ambiance.
Everything on the menu looks great – so good luck choosing! If you are looking for a vegan breakfast in Durban, that’s an option here as well. And they serve coffee from Durban’s own Colombo Coffee & Tea Company.
4. Bona Terra
Best for: Eating outdoors with lots of space
Highlights: A gorgeous setting, multiple playgrounds for the kids
If you’re willing to travel a bit further from the city, you’ll discover the sprawling Bona Terra up in Assagay, surrounded by lush countryside.
Enjoy a delicious Durban breakfast in one of the elegant seating areas and then take a wander through the premises, where you’ll find two nurseries and shops full of second-hand treasures.
Bona Terra is a great option for families, with plenty of outdoor space for kids to run around.
5. The Library Bistro (Formerly Bloomsberry)
Best for: Speciality coffees
Highlights: The Spanish omelet and the Breakfast Burrito
Take a break from the city and visit The Library Bistro up in Hillcrest.
This charming restaurant and coffee shop combines a Library exchange program with a modern Bistro.
At Library Bistro, the familiar aroma of coffee, the promise of a delicious meal, and the anticipation of a friendly buzz will offer a reprieve from the daily chaos.
It is where the community as a whole comes to refill their cup, both proverbially and, often, quite literally. The setting is light, warm, and welcoming, with a little fun in the evening, and a selection of delicious home-style food & delicious drinks.
6. Blue Waters Hotel
Best for: Buffet breakfast in Durban
Highlights: Upmarket ambiance, sweeping view of the city
R170 (US$ 11) gets you into one of Durban’s top breakfast buffets, served in the Versailles restaurant at Blue Waters Hotel on Durban’s beachfront.
The buffet includes everything from fresh fruit compote to bacon and eggs to homemade Belgian waffles.
The setting is elegant, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering an exceptional view of Durban’s pride and joy, the Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
The breakfast buffet is from 6.30am to 10am and includes drinks – coffee, tea, and juice.
Enjoy your breakfast in Durban!
Or, if you are not that much of a morning person, brunch or lunch is of course also an option!
