Are you thinking about planning a weekend trip?
The weekend is a great time to hit the road and see some sights. And, it’s less stressful than planning a long vacation.
A weekend getaway is good for you in many different ways. Whether you choose to visit a city, relax in a small beach town, or go into the mountains, you’ll return home feeling better.
Of course, it goes without saying that a little bit of planning is essential for a stress-free vacation, even if it’s just a short weekend getaway.
In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through how to plan a weekend trip. I’ll discuss every step of the process, from choosing your ideal destination to making the most of your limited time away.
Planning a Weekend Trip
1. Choosing the Perfect Destination

Selecting the right destination is the first crucial step in planning your weekend getaway.
Keep in mind various factors such as proximity, your interests, and the weather.
Are you seeking a serene beach retreat, an adventurous mountain hike, or an exciting city break? Research suitable destinations that align with your preferences.
Travel blogs, social media, and personal recommendations can be valuable tools in this process.
Check if it’s a good time of year to visit the destination, and whether there are any events happening that might make your trip even more special.

2. Setting a Budget for Your Weekend Getaway

Even though it’s only a weekend trip, the costs can add up quickly if you don’t plan carefully.
Set a budget to ensure you don’t overspend. Consider all the expenses, including transportation, accommodation, activities, and meals.
To create a realistic budget, plan ahead and try to stick to it by making conscious spending decisions.
Airfare, hotels, and rental cars tend to be more expensive when looking for a spontaneous, last minute trip.
If you can plan your weekend getaway at least a few months in advance you’ll generally be able to find more deals. But, even for a last minute weekend getaway you can find good offers.
I always recommend signing up for newsletters of your favorite airlines and car rental agencies, since they will often email special deals.
I use multi-search booking engines to find the best prices for flights, car rentals, and hotels. For flights I use Skyscanner.com, for cars and for hotels I use Booking.com.

3. Booking Transportation

Choosing the right mode of transportation is a key consideration when planning your weekend trip.
Whether it’s a car, train, bus, or flight, each option has its pros and cons.
Because you’re only going away for a weekend, I’d say it’s important to find convenient transport options that won’t take up too much time.
If you plan to fly somewhere and driving to the airport is the best option, book airport parking early. And to avoid the hefty prices that come with parking at the airport, park at an off-airport parking lot if available.
As I mentioned before, I recommend using Skyscanner.com to book flights, and Booking.com to rent a car.
Don’t forget to also research how you’ll get around once you’ve reached your destination.
How will you get from the airport to your hotel?
If there are buses, metros, or other forms of public transport, find out how to use them in advance. And check whether they only run at certain times of the day. Is Uber available at your destination or is there a different app for taxis?
If you’re driving to your destination, find out if parking is widely available and whether it’s paid or free parking. On one of my most recent weekend getaways there was only paid street parking around my accommodation, and the parking meters only took coins. I had no coins when I arrived late in the evening…
Having all your transportation researched and booked before you travel takes away a lot of stress!

4. Finding Accommodation

Your accommodation can significantly impact your overall experience during the trip.
Hotels, vacation rentals, and charming B&Bs offer different vibes and amenities.
Choose your lodging wisely based on location, budget, and the type of experience you are looking for.
I use Booking.com for my weekend getaways. They tend to offer the best prices and have a wide range of accommodation options from hotels and B&Bs to private apartments, cabins, and even some really unique places to stay such as treehouses, retro trailers, etc.
If you’re planning a weekend trip on a budget, consider staying in a hostel. I’ve written a separate article about the pros and cons of staying in a hostel.
And my final tip, if you don’t want unpleasant surprises when you arrive at your accommodation, always read the reviews before booking. Especially any negative ones.

5. Planning the Itinerary

You only have a weekend, so it becomes extra important to think about what you want to do at your chosen getaway destination.
Just relax by the pool and enjoy some nice dinners? Or do you want to see the best a city has to offer? Or maybe you’re looking for some unique things to do on your weekend trip?
I know from experience that my shorter getaways turned out better when I researched ahead of time what the best things were to see and do in my chosen destination.
Getyourguide.com and Viator.com are good websites to find the best things to do in almost any destination in the world.
Walking tours (many cities offer free walking tours) are a great way to get to know a city.
Blogs, local tourism websites, and Youtube can also be helpful to find out the best things to do, the best places to eat, etc.
I’d recommend booking the activities you really don’t want to miss in advance. But don’t pack too much in. Allow time to just relax, enjoy and see what unexpected things happen on your weekend trip.

6. Packing

Ah, packing—the task everyone loves to procrastinate.
To avoid last-minute stress, pack light and efficiently. Remember to pack for the weather and your planned activities.
Don’t forget your essentials, but try not to overpack either. Rolling clothes and using packing cubes can be a game-changer in optimizing your luggage space.
And if you’re not sure what to pack, simply Google ‘What to pack for [your destination]’ and you’ll most likely find several useful articles.

7. Preparing for Your Weekend Trip

Before going on your weekend getaway, make sure you have all the necessary travel documents.
Do you need to bring a passport and driving license? And do you have suitable travel insurance for this trip?
I always make sure I have a copy of my important documents stored on my phone as well, just in case.
If you take any prescription drugs, make sure you bring enough for the weekend. And bring some basics such as painkillers and band-aids.

A weekend getaway is a fantastic way to escape daily hassles and unwind over the weekend.
This is exactly why you shouldn’t overcommit. If you try to squeeze everything in, your agenda will be jammed from morning until night. Keep things simple and enjoy your weekend getaway!
Be open to changing your plans if an opportunity presents itself.
Strike a balance between sightseeing, relaxation, and exploration. Engage with locals, immerse yourself in the culture, and be open to trying new experiences. It’s these small moments that make your weekend trip truly unforgettable.
